I am a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist who specializes in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking. My job entails advising on the best practices for transfusion for Memorial Sloan Kettering patients, working with other physicians at our institution to recommend appropriate products for specific transfusion needs, and providing medical oversight for the MSK Blood Bank. This helps ensure that patients get safe and appropriate blood products.

In addition, I provide medical oversight in the donor room, where I assist in making sure the facility is safe for those donating whole blood, platelets, and peripheral blood stem cells. Stem cell and lymphocyte collection involves a process called apheresis where one can donate autologous (for oneself) or allogeneic (for someone else) cells for stem cell transplants or CAR T cell therapies. Through apheresis we also perform therapeutic procedures where plasma or red blood cells can be exchanged, or a patient’s white blood cell or platelet counts can be lowered. Additionally, we perform extracorporeal photopheresis procedures to treat specific disease processes.
I enjoy Transfusion Medicine because I have a strong interest in patient and donor safety as well as patient blood management and quality improvement. By ensuring the blood supply is managed appropriately and administered to those patients who need it, we help make sure this precious resource is readily available.
A pathologist is a doctor who uses a microscope to make a diagnosis from cell and tissue samples. They analyze the samples to learn the cause and effects of a health condition.
